Some positive news

Sadly, today marks the 1 year anniversary from the last DGS LAN. It’s hard to believe that was already a year ago. Of course we are all too familiar with COVID now, and hopefully the positive news about vaccines points to a return to normalcy in the upcoming months. While it’s still too early to know for sure, I am hoping that the general population will start recieving them early next year, the gathering bans will be lifted, and we can make up for lost time in 2021.

In further positive news, we’ve started the basement finishing project! So once LANs resume, we should have an awesome spot with room for over 20 attendees, a half bath, TV room, and separate room for the ping pong. Best part is an electrical system designed around LANs! I’ll post update pictures here and there, so begin to hype a little, but pace yourself! While we are still a few months from a LAN, remember how quickly this time passed by and it will seem short until we have another.

Quake on the Lake 2020 Announcement

Waking up groggy, you stumble unsurely to the window. The murky view of a barren wasteland is your reward. Remnants of a city once great; now all that remains is broken ruins. What happened here and why can’t you remember it? Where are you? Is there anyone else nearby? These are the questions that begin to form in your mind as you collapse backwards in your isolation vault.

As you begin to explore and learn, answers come slowly. It’s the year 2020 and the outside world has been rendered uninhabitable by a global pandemic. The only safe place is indoors and far away from the “others”. The cities have been destroyed by a war between the brutal authoritarian regime and civilian rioters. There is nothing of value for you out there.

What remains of civilization is small groups, keeping socially distant from each other. Resilient people who have trained electronically for conflict for years. Using specialized programs, these elite soldiers have trained for any number of different scenarios. Whether it’s counter-terrorism, space combat, surviving the bowels of hell or the shores of Normandy… Guns, swords, Mechwarriors or card games, these survivors are summoned together for one final week long battle.

Will you heed their call and join them?

Vault Dwellers, make your way to Atlanta GA July 26-August 01 for this year’s Quake on the Lake event. Due to the prevalent pandemic, we expect a smaller than usual turnout this year. We’ve been unable to cancel the reservation so it will go on as planned. To cover costs as best as possible, this year the price will be $500. Even this will be unlikely to cover everything, so please consider a voluntary donation at the end of the event if possible. Please pay via cash, check, or PayPal to mhallida@gmail.com (not the eclipse278 account!). Other arrangements can be made if necessary. You can pay anytime before the event, but our last house payment is July 5th, so paying by then is preferred.

This year’s house is the “Atlanta Luxurious” house. It features 8 bedrooms and 4 bath and 200Mbps xfinity internet. The LAN is planned to be in the basement theater area unless there’s a separate unpictured area like last year. Due to the pandemic, organized events will be kept to a minimum. Possibly outdoor events such as golf and hiking will be planned. 6 Flags Georgia is nearby but we are unsure if we are comfortable with that yet.

Sorry for the late announcement this year. Obviously things have been a little up-in-the-air. But we figure we’ll lose a little less money running the event than outright forfeiting our house deposit. And at least we’ll get to have a QotL.

QotL 2020 Location Voting

The time has come to discuss QotL houses and vote for a location. All properties are available for our target week of July 26-Aug 01.

Atlanta GA Duplex

This house is two single units put together. We’d have to use one of the living rooms for the LAN. It’s not ideal space but the price is the lowest and it has good download speeds at 600 down / 10 up.

Atlanta GA Luxurious

For only $25 more this house is more comfortable and features Xfinity internet at 200Mbps. The basement area should provide for a comfortable LAN. Further away from OH and NC than the next two houses though.

Washington DC House

Same price as the bigger ATL house and internet speed confirmed with a speedtest at 70 down / 70 up. Easy access to Wash DC. Least travel from OH and NC but no firearms I believe? Has ideal Party Hall space.

Gatlinburg Cabin

Most expensive option but in the familiar area of Gatlinburg which is centrally located for most people. Claims “Spectrum Wifi” but don’t know the speed. Judging from the Spectrum website, it should be at least 200Mbps. If the room with the ping pong table isn’t big enough we might have to use the living room for the LAN.
